The area needs to be beautified and the youth need to realize the beauty surrounding them and have a place that will instill a sense of peace. We will empower young people in the community by showing them how they can assess the needs of their community, enlist the help of adults, plan a solution and carry out a project. We will add a Black History aspect to the park by creating a rose memorial garden which will be a constant reminder of our heritage. The park will be open to the public to sit, rest, relax and reflect on the beauty and heritage surrounding them. The success of the project will be through empowering young people in the African- American community by showing them how they can assess the needs of their community, plan a solution and carry out a project. We needed more adult help, so I solicited the help of a dear friend and Sister in Christ, Ms. Jeanette Langford. We also needed to teach the youth the meaning of service-learning, so with the help of YSA's Service-Learning Curriculum Guide, I asked Marcia Harris to implement the guide in her Time Out for Me Program with the youth in the community. We also needed the knowledge of building the Peace Park, so we have engaged the expertise of Tim Doyle Landscaping. We petitioned the church's help in building a brick memorial walk-way at the entrance of the park and with everyone in agreement, we have started the journey of building a Peace Park. We invite you to explore the pages on this website and hope that you will gain the same enthusiasm and commitment that we share in this project. We will make the Peace Park a place where we create a living reminder that peace begins within the hearts of each one of us…in our thoughts, in our words and in our actions. Each day, each one of us has an opportunity to make the world a better place. Together, we can make this happen. |
