| The beauty of Roses will pay tribute to our African-American Heritage. The Rose Memorial Garden will give a historical time-line of African-American events of importance as well as pay tribute to some of our African-American leaders. Each rose planted, will be picked on the basis of the name of the rose and how that rose connects to Black History and will be conveyed through literature mounted on plaques. The garden will address questions such as, “Where did we come from?” “Who are we?” “Where are we going?” A rose in the garden will be the rose named “Distant Drums” and will discuss our journey and captivity during the Trans- Atlantic Slave Trade. “Rhapsody in Blue” will denote the Harlem Renaissance. “Black Jade”, which is the deepest of all red roses, will represent Harriet Tubman. "Let Freedom Ring" will pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King. “We Salute You” will be dedicated to Rosa Parks, for we salute Mrs. Parks for her courage and ability to not give up her seat on the front of the bus. The Rose Memorial Garden will be displayed in the form of a quilt. The quilt represents the quilts that were hung on clotheslines to map out the trail for the run- away slaves during the Underground Railroad. |
